Imphal: People of Manipur observed Patriots' Day on Wednesday, remembering the valour and sacrifice of their forefathers who fought against British colonial rule during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla led the state in paying tributes to the fallen heroes, including Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General, who were hanged by the British on Aug 13 in 1891.Speaking on the occasion held at Bir Tikendrajit Park in Imphal, Bhalla said the state has faced its share of troubles in recent times but the courage and resilience of the people continue to inspire hope, peace, and stability. Manipur today stands at a crossroads but it must be reminded that the lessons of the past must shape the future, he said. "In 1891, young men and women stood shoulder to shoulder with their elders, ready to defend their land. The same spirit that resisted colonial domination is propelling Manipur to lead in sports, arts, technology and sustainable development. Our state has already shown the nation how young Manipuris excel from the sporting arenas to cultural stages. Let's now show the world how we can unite for peace, progress, and prosperity," he told drawing the attention of the youths.He further said the govt is committed to restoring peace and advancing developments and working in close cooperation with the Centre and local communities.
