The Indian Embassy in Phnom Penh and the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA) Tuesday agreed to further widen the horizons in tourism cooperation by initiating joint efforts to increase the number of both inbound and outbound tourists between the two countries. This was highlighted at an event titled, 'Promotion of Tourism between India and Cambodia' attended by Indian Ambassador Vanlalvawna Bawitlung and Chhay Sivlin, President of CATA. The event served as a great platform, where representatives of the Cambodian tourism industry got an opportunity to learn more about India, while Indian tourism associations were provided with detailed presentations on what the Kingdom can offer to visitors from the world's most populous country. Speaking at the event, Ambassador Vanlalvawna said there is a strong feeling in both countries to enhance people-to-people relations and people-to-people exchange. India and Cambodia share a special relationship, which is based on common historical and civilisational heritage. "Cambodia's outbound visitor number stood at over 1.8 million last year, and only 8,000 were visitors to India. The number shows huge space for growth, and India has so much to offer in terms of spiritual, health and creative tourism for Cambodian visitors." The Indian envoy said that a strong cooperation between the travel and tourism industries of both countries, especially involving the private sector, is the path forward for the tourism ties to scale new highs. He hailed the role of CATA as the principal collaborator in the initiative. Sivlin said it is time for the travel industries of both countries to jointly advertise and promote the tourist attractions and offerings. "Angkor Wat, the Kingdom's most important tourist attraction, showcases the profound influence of Indian civilisation on Cambodia. The ties run deeper as we share rich heritage in the realms of religion and civilisation." When Khmer Times pointed out the statistics, which show Indian tourists constituted less than one percent of total tourist arrivals in the Kingdom, she cited the primary reasons. "The primary reasons are lack of air connectivity, limited awareness and marketing issues, visa and infrastructure problems and fake news across social media platforms with negative intentions. "Most Indian tourists travel to Cambodia via other countries, and this results in longer travel times and inconvenient layovers; at times it would even take an overnight to transfer flight. "IndiGo is set to commence direct flight service between the Indian city of Kolkata and Siem Reap in October, and Cambodia should take this opportunity to promote its destinations." Special presentations made by the representatives of CATA and Indian tourism and travel associations displayed the strength and potential of the tourism sectors of both countries. Yan Chhuong of CATA described the three seasons in the Kingdom's tourism calendar. "The peak season is from November to March, when the country gets the maximum number of visitors. The shoulder season covers three months - April, May and October, while the green season is from June to September. "The tourism strategies devised by the Royal Government and the private sector vary from season to season." He also gave a detailed description of all important tourism offerings across the Cambodian provinces and cities.
