Hyderabad: Heavy rains lashed several districts across Telangana on Wednesday, throwing normal life out of gear as lakes and canals overflowed, roads were damaged and vehicular traffic was disrupted. Two deaths were reported from erstwhile Karimnagar district due to the downpour. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Medak, Sangareddy and Vikarabad districts for Thursday (August 14, 2025), warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. The IMD has also advised the public to avoid venturing into low-lying and flood-prone areas. An orange alert was issued for Kothagudem, Bhupalapally, Kamareddy, Mahabubabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Mulugu, Nirmal, Nizamabad and Suryapet districts, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall, while the remaining 21 districts were placed under a yellow alert for heavy rain. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are likely at isolated places in all districts, the IMD bulletin stated. Bheemini in Mancherial district recorded the highest rainfall of 23.8 cm, followed by Tandoor (Mancherial) 17.4 cm, Chitayal (Bhupalapally) 16.8 cm, Bellampalle (Mancherial) 16.5 cm, Regonda (Bhupalapally) 13.5 cm and Kagaznagar (Asifabad) 13.3 cm. In anticipation of further downpours, the Medchal-Malkajgiri district administration declared a holiday for all schools on Thursday. The decision was taken after district collector Mikkilineni Manu Choudary reviewed the preparedness of the administration in a meeting with officials. Tragedy struck Sakarasi Kasikunta village when an 80-year-old woman, Pasunoori Buchamma, drowned in her sleep after floodwaters entered her house. His body was later recovered by police. In the Godavari basin, most irrigation projects recorded only moderate inflows on Wednesday, except Medigadda and Tupakulagudem barrages. Medigadda registered inflows and outflows of 1,57,690 cusecs, while Tupakulagudem saw inflows of 1,41,350 cusecs and outflows of 1,50,280 cusecs. Sriramsagar received 12,769 cusecs of inflow, Kadem project 24,723 cusecs inflow and 18,307 cusecs outflow after three gates were lifted, Yellampally 19,062 cusecs, and Mid Manair 11,314 cusecs. Only Singur and Kadem projects have reached full reservoir level (FRL), while others remain below capacity. In contrast, the Krishna basin projects witnessed heavy inflows. At Nagarjuna Sagar, inflows stood at 2,28,141 cusecs, with 26 gates lifted to release 2,69,445 cusecs downstream. Srisailam received 1,89,651 cusecs, prompting officials to lift seven gates and release 2,74,602 cusecs. The Jurala project recorded inflows of 90,000 cusecs and released 91,340 cusecs.
