Hyderabad: With the India Meteorological Department predicting heavy rainfall over Greater Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has placed its machinery on high alert, commissioner R.V. Karnan said on Wednesday. He inspected Musi River water levels and the ongoing Musarambagh bridge construction, stressing the need for continuous monitoring and swift response to safeguard communities and infrastructure. "Our priority is to protect residents and deliver critical infrastructure projects without delay, even in challenging weather conditions," he explained. GHMC advised residents along the Musi to follow official alerts and avoid flood-prone areas. At the head office control room, Karnan reviewed operations, checked pending complaints, and directed staff to remain on round-the-clock watch. The corporation is working closely with the police and officials of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), Metro Rail, irrigation and revenue departments to manage emergencies. Measures at nala points aim to prevent flooding, while citizens have been urged to avoid low-lying areas and stay indoors unless necessary. The commissioner warned against opening manholes under any circumstances and asked residents to report such incidents to the control room. Special attention is being paid to traffic choke points, with police and HMWS&SB coordination to prevent congestion. Underground sumps at key locations have reduced waterlogging and more are planned. Efforts are underway to clear waterlogging, improve stormwater drainage and restore damaged roads. The GHMC has also issued advisories to avoid flood-prone areas and is coordinating with police and HYDRAA to maintain traffic flow.
