Mumbai Aug 8 ( UNI) In an initiative to ensure the greater availability of theatres for Marathi films, Maharashtra's Minister for Cultural Affairs Ashish Shelar today directed the formation of a joint committee to study the challenges faced by single-screen cinema halls across the state. Several organisations including associations of theatre owners and operators, artists, and film producers had submitted a memorandum to Shelar seeking government assistance, grants and policy support for single-screen theatres. In response, a meeting was held with the officials from the Cultural Affairs Department, Goregaon Film City, and key stakeholders including representatives of the cinema owners association. Shelar stated that a joint committee comprising officials from the departments of Urban Development, Home, Revenue, Finance, and Cultural Affairs, along with domain experts, be set up to conduct a detailed study. The committee is expected to submit its report within two months. The minister also suggested that the committee should explore incentive schemes for screening Marathi films in approximately 300 operational and non-operational single-screen cinemas across the state. Meanwhile, a separate meeting was held to discuss the proposed theatre complex in Goregaon, Mumbai. Actor Sunil Barve and the local residents have been actively campaigning for the project, even initiating a signature drive. The review meeting, attended by MLA Vidya Thakur, municipal officials, and artists, was chaired by Minister Shelar.
