Impasse in Chakma council after CEM's ouster | Guwahati News - Times of India

Aizawl: The political situation in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) remains uncertain following the removal of chief executive member (CEM) Rasik Mohan Chakma through a no-confidence vote on Wednesday. No party currently holds sufficient seats to establish governance in the council. Mizo National Front (MNF), which initially secured control of the 11th CADC by winning 10 seats in the May 9, 2023 elections and gaining support from 4 additional council members, now retains only one MDC -- Rasik Mohan Chakma himself. The five-time CEM now stands isolated as all other MNF members have withdrawn their support. BJP, originally winning 5 seats in the previous CADC election but losing 4 MDCs to MNF, has strengthened its position with 9 MDCs following the addition of 8 new members. Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), despite having no elected representatives in the previous council elections, now commands 10 MDCs after acquiring 5 former MNF members on Wednesday. At a modest welcome ceremony at the BJP office in Kamalanagar (Chawngte), district committee vice-president Doyal Chandra Dewan welcomed the new MDCs, expressing confidence about BJP's enhanced prospects in CADC governance. The newly inducted BJP MDCs include Lakkhan Chakma, Sundor Muni Chakma, Molin Kumar Chakma, Ananta Bikash Chakma, Montu Chakma, Kalasoga Chakma, Supon Chakma and Sanjib Chakma. MNF officials claim the ruling ZPM has been strategically working to dismantle the MNF administration under Rasik Mohan Chakma, while the BJP has been actively pursuing MNF MDCs to establish their control. BJP, which first entered the Mizoram legislature in 2018, continues to expand its influence in minority-dominated regions, particularly in the Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC). Having secured power in MADC and two assembly seats, the party now focuses on CADC and Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC).
