MUMBAI: City-based businessman and BJP functionary Dilawar A Chaugle has appealed to the Centre to give Padmashree Award to Sunni Cleric "Grand Mufti of India" Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar for getting execution of Malayali nurse Nimisha Priya suspended.Though office of the senior cleric claimed the execution order has been "revoked" by the Houthi militia in Yemeni capital Sanaa, there is no official confirmation either from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) or family of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi whom the nurse allegedly murdered."The fact that Nimisha Priya's execution has been put on hold due to intervention of the senior Sunni cleric is significant. He deserves the Padma Award and the Centre must acknowledge his role and the act of kindness as well as his huge contribution in social and educational fields," said Chaugle. "A Padmashree for the hugely respected religious leader and educationist will be a fitting acknowledgement for his kind role in getting the life of an Indian on death row saved," added Chaugle who has met the Grand Mufti.Nimisha Priya was scheduled to be executed on July 16 for the alleged murder of her business partner, Talal Abdo Mehdi, a Yemeni national, in 2017. However, her sentencing was suspended as the "Grand Mufti of India" intervened. No further date of execution was set.According to a statement issued by the Grand Mufti's office:"The death sentence of Nimisha Priya, which was previously suspended, has been overturned. A high-level meeting held in Sanaa decided to completely cancel the death sentence that was temporarily suspended earlier."
