Dibrugarh: Residents of Khamjongia village in the Titabar area of Jorhat district came together to rescue four wild elephants, including a struggling calf, that had fallen into a deep pond. The incident took place around 6.10 pm on Wednesday, when the elephants which got separated from their herd, found themselves trapped in the large pond, unable to climb out due to its steep slippery edges. The elephants repeatedly attempted to scale the pond's steep sides but kept sliding back into the deep muddy water. As it got dark and temperatures dropped, concern grew among the villagers, particularly for the young calf showing signs of exhaustion. "We heard a distressing sound coming from the pond around 6.10 pm. When we rushed to the site, we found four elephants had fallen into the pond and were struggling to climb out. The slippery edges of the pond made it impossible for them to escape. The forest officials wanted to wait for an excavator but we knew time was crucial. We knew we had to act quickly. We couldn't just stand by and do nothing," village headman Hem Chandra Borah said. Armed with hoes, shovels and spades from their homes, the men, women and children of the village worked in unison to dig a makeshift path along the pond's edge. Their persistent efforts finally paid off at approximately 10.15 pm, when all four elephants managed to climb to safety. "It was a moment of pure joy when they finally walked free. Though the elephants were limping, we were relieved to see them walk free without any major injuries. If the people had not acted quickly, there was a real possibility that the elephant calf may have perished in the deep waters as it was visibly struggling to stay afloat. The moment they stepped out, it felt like a victory for all of us," Ujjal Baruah, a local said.
