Hyderabad: Telangana has been recognised for its highest organ donation rate across the country under the Jeevandan programme by the central health ministry. The Union health minister, JP Nadda, presented the award to the Jeevandan team on behalf of the Telangana govt at the 15th Indian Organ Donation Day, organised by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), in New Delhi on Saturday. According to officials, Telangana recorded an organ donation rate of 4.88 donors per million population (pmp) in 2024, surpassing the national average of 0.8 pmp. Since the inception of Jeevandan programm in 2012, it has facilitated organ and tissue donation from 1,673 deceased donors, resulting in the transplantation of 6,309 organs and tissues.This includes 464 transplantations so far this year, 725 in 2024 and 729 in 2023.Expressing happiness, health minister Damodar Rajanarasimha said that the Transplantation of Human Organs & Tissues Act (THOTA) has been recently adopted to ensure that organs are provided to people of all the sections in the society."The Jeevandan programme has consistently set the standard for organ donation awareness, coordination and successful transplantation, establishing the state as a model for the rest of the country," said Dr Sree Bhusan Raju, nodal officer and senior nephrologist.
