Nagpur: A call threatening to blow up the residence of Union minister Nitin Gadkari in the city on Sunday morning prompted a swift response from the security agencies and Nagpur police, leading to the arrest of a liquor shop employee within two hours. The call, made to the emergency helpline no. 112 at 8.46am, claimed a bomb would detonate at Gadkari's residence within 10 minutes. Bomb squads were dispatched, and security around Gadkari's residence near Jaiprakash Nagar Metro Station and Mahal was significantly tightened. The bomb threat later turned out to be a hoax. A thorough search confirmed no explosives, said police. Jt CP Navinchandra Reddy said the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) conducted anti-sabotage check at both the residences of the senior BJP leader at Mahal and on Wardha Road. Adequate security has been deployed at both the places, he said.The cyber experts of city police and the advanced call tracer technology indicated the caller's identity and possible location of the caller. The call was traced to mobile number 7498579746, owned by one Umesh Raut, who is a liquor addict and employed at a liquor shop near Medical Chowk for the last 10 years, said police. Following the technical surveillance feedback, a police team rushed to Medical Chowk. Another team reached Raut's address which was traced to Tulsibagh Road in Mahal, but nobody lived there. After confirming Raut's current address from a source, the police team reached Bima Hospital area where he stayed on rent.A team from Kotwali police station led by senior inspector Ritesh Aher netted Raut within two hours from the rented room. "The control room alerted me at 8.56am. We formed two teams. One went searching for the suspect while the other was tasked to secure and check the residence of Gadkari," said Aher.Raut claimed the call was made by his room partner and co-worker, identified as Daga, from his cellphone while he was asleep, police said and added that Daga, who has a history of petty thefts, is untraceable while his cellphone is switched off. Police also said Daga had been working at the same liquor shop for the last four months and the cellphone with him is registered in Raut's name.Offence has been registered against Raut and accomplice at Kotwali police station. Police said Raut had lost his parents early, while his elder brother is afflicted with paralysis.Deputy commissioner of police Rahul Madane said, "Investigation has begun to determine the motive behind the call." Police are questioning Raut in custody. The investigating teams are probing whether Raut's actions were influenced by personal grievances, intoxication, or other factors.In January and March 2023, Gadkari's office near Khamla Chowk in Nagpur had received similar threatening calls. The first call was allegedly made by Jayesh Kantha alias Jayesh Pujari from Belagavi jail in Karnataka on January 14 to demand Rs100 crore. Pujari had allegedly claimed to be a member of Dawood Ibrahim's gang. He again allegedly made a threatening call to Gadkari's office on March 21, to extort Rs10 crore.
