Ganesh idols get ready for festival | Coimbatore News - Times of India

Coimbatore: It's that of the year when artists making Ganesh idols dot the city, displaying different types of idols that come in various sizes and colours. Artists making the idols said they were flooded with orders as Ganesh Chaturthi was around the corner.Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated across the country on August 27. The Hindu Munnani, BJP and other right-wing outfits usually celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in a grand manner in the city and rural areas. They have started visiting artists to place orders for Ganesh idols. Artists at Rajavalli Shanmugam Arts on Sundakkamuthur Road in the city is busy making Ganesh idols. "We make different types of Ganesh idols. We have received orders from various right-wing outfits from across Coimbatore and nearby areas. As per the govt norms, the maximum height of the idols will be 10ft," said Saravanakumar, who runs the idol-making unit. He said a large idol was priced at Rs30,000. "Unavailability of clay is making it difficult to make the idols. The state govt should provide some subsidy to the idol makers. The idols won't affect the environment and create water pollution during immersion." Senthil Kumar, state secretary, Indu Makkal Katchi, said the artists were asked to make more Ganesh idols for the celebration. "The height of Ganesh idols is restricted to 10ft as per the govt order. The state govt should reconsider these restrictions and allow artists to make taller Ganesh idols. The making of Ganesh idols provides direct and indirect employment to many people."
