Hyderabad: The Centre has awarded the Telangana government for securing the maximum number of organ donations in the country. In an event observing the National Organ Donation Day in Delhi, Union health minister J.P. Nadda presented the award to representatives of the state's Jeevandan programme on Saturday. While the national average in 2024 stood at 0.8 organ donations per 10 lakh population, Telangana reported a significantly higher rate of 4.88 per 10 lakh, according to the Union health ministry. In recognition of this achievement, the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) presented an award to Telangana. Health minister Damodar Rajanarsimha expressed happiness over Telangana being named the national leader in organ donation. He noted that Telangana recently adopted the THOTA Act to ensure equitable access to organs, regardless of a person's financial status. Rajanarasimha also added that organ transplant surgeries are being offered free of cost under the Aarogyasri scheme. He said that in 2024 alone, organs were harvested from 188 donors, helping save the lives of 725 recipients.
