Mandya: Social Welfare Minister and Mysuru District In-Charge Dr. H.C. Mahadevappa has claimed that the foundation stone for the KRS (Krishna Raja Sagar) Dam was first laid by Tipu Sultan, though no one dares to speak about it openly today. Speaking at a public event after laying the foundation stone for a new Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhavan within the existing Ambedkar Bhavan premises in Srirangapatna, Mandya district, on Sunday, Mahadevappa asserted that it was Tipu Sultan who initially planned and laid the foundation for the reservoir . "Even today, this is inscribed at the main gate of the KRS dam. But unfortunately, people either don't know the history or lack the courage to speak about it," he said. Highlighting Tipu Sultan's progressive stance, Mahadevappa pointed out that during Tipu's era, the devadasi system, where economically and socially oppressed women were forced into temple service, was abolished. "Tipu realized the injustice in the system and acted against it even during those times," he noted. He further stated that Tipu Sultan never gifted a single inch of land to the privileged, introduced silk to India, and was one of the greatest freedom fighters who resisted British colonial rule on the battlefield.
