Biometric enrolment of refugees begins in four Mizoram dists | Guwahati News - Times of India

Aizawl: Mizoram has launched its biometric enrolment process for refugees across the districts of Serchhip, Lunglei, Champhai, and Hnahthial. The initiative began in Serchhip district, where enrolment for Myanmar and Bangladesh refugees commenced on Wednesday, according to SDO (Sadar) Rebecca Laldinmawii Hrahsel. The process, which started in the Serchhip Chanmari VC area on July 30, will continue next Monday and Friday.Serchhip district is currently home to 647 Myanmar refugees, including 198 male adults, 150 females, and 299 children. Additionally, Thenzawl town hosts 266 Bangladesh refugees, comprising 75 male adults, 73 females, and 118 children. Most refugees reside with relatives or in rented accommodations rather than relief camps.In Lunglei district, biometric enrolment for over 70 Myanmar refugees at the Ramthar camp began on July 30, with completion expected by next week. Lunglei currently shelters approximately 1,991 Myanmar refugees.Champhai district, hosting the largest number of Myanmar refugees, initiated enrolment in three village council areas, but technical issues have delayed progress. Champhai is home to about 13,586 refugees.Hnahthial district's enrolment began in Thingsai village, with plans to expand to other areas. The district currently accommodates 701 Myanmar refugees, primarily in relief camps, with 230 in Thingsai alone.Overall, Mizoram hosts 32,504 Myanmar refugees, with Champhai, Lawngtlai, and Siaha districts having the highest numbers. The influx follows the Myanmar military crackdown that began in Feb 2021.

Mizoram decides to collect biometrics, biographic data of Myanmar refugees

Guwahati: The Mizoram government has decided to collect biometrics and biographic data of Myanmar refugees taking shelter in the northeastern state after a military coup in the neighboring country in February 2021. Earlier, Manipur had carried out this exercise. Mizoram shelters 38,059 Myanmar, Bangladesh refugees; biometric drive nears completion

Aizawl, Feb 23 (UNI) Mizoram is currently providing shelter to 38,059 refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh, State Home Minister K. Sapdanga informed the Legislative Assembly on Monday.
