Bulandshahr, Aug 1 (UNI) A local court today delivered its verdict in the high-profile 2018 Syana violence case, sentencing five individuals to life imprisonment for the murder of Inspector Subodh Kumar. Additionally, 33 others were sentenced to seven years in prison for their involvement in rioting, arson, and attempted murder. The judgment was pronounced at 5:45 PM by the district court, a day after all 38 accused were convicted. The court had reserved August 1 for the sentencing. Those sentenced include a district panchayat member, a village head, leaders from the BJP and Nishad Party, and a city-level office-bearer of the RSS. Police had originally filed charges against 44 people in the case. Of them, five have since died, and one minor's case is being heard in a juvenile court. Speaking to the media, ASP Rijul of Bulandshahr said that heavy security was deployed outside the court, including three Circle Officers (COs) and forces from five police stations. The surrounding area was brought under police control to prevent any unrest. The case stems from events on December 3, 2018, when remains of slaughtered cattle were found in Mahav village under the Syana police station. The discovery triggered outrage among right-wing groups and local villagers. According to police, accused Yogesh Raj and his associates gathered a crowd and incited violence. The mob loaded the cattle remains onto a tractor-trolley and marched to the Chingrawathi police outpost on the Bulandshahr highway, blocking the road. When police attempted to intervene, the crowd turned violent, pelting stones and eventually setting the outpost ablaze. During the clash, then-inspector Subodh Kumar was killed while trying to control the situation. A local youth, Sumit, also died from gunshot wounds during the violence. In the aftermath, police registered cases against 10 people for cow slaughter, which helped calm the situation.
