Bhubaneswar/Balasore: In a shocking revelation in the Balasore student self-immolation case, local MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi on Saturday disclosed that the college principal had confronted the student with an unfavourable internal inquiry committee report and demanded an apology on the very day she took the extreme step. This revelation aligns with a police complaint filed by the student's cousin after the incident.Speaking to mediapersons in Balasore, Sarangi said the principal admitted to telling the student that the report favoured the teacher and asked her to write an apology letter to resolve the issue. "He claimed he was trying to counsel her, but I question whether this can truly be considered counselling," Sarangi said.The MP, who had met the student on June 30 to discuss her grievances, criticised the inquiry committee's methodology, particularly their practice of interviewing students in groups, which he believed could lead to biased testimonies.According to Sarangi, the principal's security guard confirmed the presence of the accused teacher in the principal's chamber during the student's meeting, despite the principal's initial denial.The former Union minister pointed out several irregularities in the internal inquiry committee report, noting its apparent bias in favour of the teacher while focusing on irrelevant details about the student's conduct. "The report seems more like an advocacy for the teacher rather than an objective investigation," he observed.Responding to opposition criticism, Sarangi welcomed a judicial inquiry by a Supreme Court sitting judge, dismissing allegations against him as politically motivated. "I pursued this matter with complete sincerity and commitment. I have no role in this incident, but false accusations are being spread against me on social media," he clarified.The MP detailed that the student had filed a formal harassment complaint against an assistant professor on June 30. Despite the principal's assurance of an inquiry, student leaders approached Sarangi citing administrative inaction."I immediately contacted the college principal and the Superintendent of Police after hearing the students' grievances. I even met her personally and assured her of justice," Sarangi said, adding that he had expected the internal committee to conduct a fair investigation, but that was unfortunately not done.Meanwhile, the crime branch investigating the girl's self-immolation has continued probe to ascertain various aspects of the incident, including source of petrol used for self-immolation, truth behind the sexual harassment allegation against the teacher and institutional response to the allegation. Sources said the CB sleuths have been trying to identify the person who procured petrol for the girl. The investigators questioned fuel filling stations in the vicinity of the college regarding purchase of petrol in bottles by anyone on July 12.A University Grants Commission (UGC) team, which reached Balasore on Friday, has continued its inquiry separately tracking sequence of events from the day the girl first lodged a complaint till her death. The team spoke to several students, staff members and people around the campus in the past two days to ascertain facts, sources said.
