Bengaluru: A 25-year-old telecaller died, and four others sustained injuries when a BMTC electric bus, driven by its conductor, rammed into an eatery on the pavements of Peenya Friday morning. He just wanted to move the vehicle a few feet ahead but didn't realise he was going to unleash horror. The deceased is G Suma Naik, a resident of Sanjeevininagar in Hegganahalli and originally from Mandya. She worked as a telecaller for a banking and financial services company in Hebbal and lived in a paying guest accommodation. The injured are identified as Pavana, Sunita, Keertana, and Salma, all working for different private companies. Among them, Sunita was inside the electric bus, while the others were walking on the pavement. Police arrested BMTC conductor Ramesh M, 47, from depot 22, Peenya, on charges of causing death due to negligence. Ramesh possessed a driving licence for heavy vehicles and often drove BMTC buses. However, he had little knowledge of the operating system of an electric bus, preliminary investigations revealed. The accident occurred around 8.15am at Peenya BMTC bus stand on Sunkadakatte Road. Since it is the starting point for BMTC buses, a chain of buses is parked in the bus station, located on the main road. Two electric buses were scheduled to leave for Majestic. The bus involved in the accident was second in the lane.According to eyewitnesses and passengers in the bus, driver Dileep went to the washroom since there was a 10-minute gap. "By then, the first bus in the lane moved away. As this bus was next to depart, conductor Ramesh, who was issuing tickets, decided to park the bus a little ahead," Suneeta, one of the injured, told traffic police. "Ramesh sat in the driver's seat and turned the engine on. For a few seconds, he could not move the bus. We could see confusion on his face; he was looking down, left, and right. Then, suddenly the bus moved and went out of Ramesh's control," other passengers said. The bus hit an eatery on the pavement, around 100 feet away. "The bus rammed into Suma and three others before crashing into the eatery and coming to a halt. A small fire broke out inside the eatery as its gas stove fell, and the gas supply got disconnected. Some people inside the eatery quickly doused the fire," eyewitnesses told police.BMTC said in a statement that officials from the northeast division visited the site and a detailed investigation is being carried out.
