Patna: The shocking murder of gangster Chandan Mishra inside a ward of a private hospital in Patna on July 17 marked the end of a sweet-bitter partnership-cum-rivalry between two notorious criminals that began as juveniles. The prime suspect -- mastermind behind the murder -- is said to be Chandan's former associate and once close friend, Onkarnath Singh, alias Sheru.The duo, who once terrorised the Shahabad region of Bihar, experienced a dramatic turn in their relationship from friends to foe. Their partnership, which began while serving time in a remand home in 2009, dominated four districts -- Bhojpur, Buxar, Rohtas and Kaimur -- through a reign of terror lasting nearly a decade. The gang was involved in the murder of a coaching operator and policeman on jail duty in Bhojpur district among others. It gained attention after the gang announced to kill Buxar's lime trader Rajendra Kesari when he refused to pay extortion, and the next day on Aug 21, 2011, Chandan did just that. However, a rift occurred in the Chandan-Sheru gang again while serving jail terms, this time as adults, in 2015.They had formed a gang after coming out of the juvenile home, and became notorious for extortion, murders and brazen shoot-outs. Their signature method involved motorcycle-borne shootings using 9mm pistols, targeting businessmen, contractors and law enforcement officials.For Chandan, it all started during a match at Sonbarsa Cricket Ground in Buxar around 2006. While playing, a fight broke out between Chandan and one Sonu Mishra from his village. Chandan went to Sonu's house to complain, but was beaten up instead. After returning home, he took his father's licensed rifle and shot Sonu dead, marking the beginning of his tainted career. An Inter commerce student then, Chandan was caught by the villagers and handed over to police. He spent three-and-a-half years in jail, before being sent to a remand home after his family provided proof of him being a minor. Chandan, however, managed to escape, during a court appearance in Buxar in Oct 2010.Sheru was in the juvenile home for killing his uncle. The first murder by the Chandan-Sheru duo was of Naushad, the former head of Naya Bhojpur panchayat (Buxar). According to Chandan's confession, Naushad wanted to have them killed. One Ilyas Mian was acting as a middleman. Although Chandan or Sheru did not know Naushad, they used an associate to identify him. They followed Naushad on a bike and shot him in head with 9mm bullets, which went on to become their modus operandi.It is said the Chandan-Sheru gang members used to live in Maulabag area of Buxar.The Chandan-Sheru gang committed six murders in 2011, including of Kesari on Aug 21 that year, and one each in 2012 and 2013. After the murder of Kesari, both fled to Kolkata, where they were arrested, before being presented in court on Dec 17, 2012.During this time, Sheru snatched a weapon from a guard in the court, shot him, and escaped by jumping over a wall. However, a few days later, Sheru was arrested in Ara. Once again, Chandan and Sheru were imprisoned in Buxar jail.But yet another fight led to Chandan's break-up with Sheru. On the evening of July 23, 2015, a fight broke out in Buxar jail between the two friends over the distribution of extortion money, indicating that their partnership had ended. Afterwards, Chandan was transferred to Bhagalpur and then to Beur jail in Patna. Sheru was sentenced to death by the lower court, which was later commuted to life imprisonment by the Patna high court.It is almost after a decade that Sheru is suspected to end it all by killing Chandan.
