COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore corporation is yet to retrieve a piece of open space reserve (OSR) land in Podanur area, even two years after the Madras high court directed it to evict encroachers and demolish unauthorised constructions.On Thursday, residents prevented a ruling party member when he allegedly attempted to fence a portion of the OSR land. On Friday, the corporation placed a board declaring that the property belongs to the civic body.The said OSR land is in Karunanidhi Nagar, in ward number 85. The layout was established in 1972 when the area was under the Kurichi town panchayat, before the town panchayat merged with the corporation. The layout comprised 41 plots, with approximately 42 cents allocated for OSR. The reserve site had not been handed over to the local body, leading to encroachment, and the promoter subsequently sold it to various buyers.Following the 2011 delimitation, it was established that local bodies would be the custodians of reserve sites, regardless of whether they were officially transferred or not. An encroacher had constructed an unauthorised building on the OSR land. The corporation issued a notice to the encroacher in March 2023. The encroacher approached the high court claiming ownership of the land. After verifying the approved layout plan, the Madras high court ruled in favour of the corporation in July 2023. The court directed the civic body to take appropriate action within eight weeks.Even two years after the order, the civic body hasn't demolished the illegal structure. Exploiting this situation, a ruling party member allegedly attempted to fence a portion of the reserve site, claiming it was an extension of his adjacent property. This led to a confrontation when residents intervened to stop the encroachment. South Zone chairwoman Dhanalakshmi said, "Procedures to take possession of the OSR land will be initiated soon, and strict action will be taken against trespassers."
