Opinion | India: The Next Israel? The Case For A 4+ Front War Doctrine

India is facing a 4+ front war. The question is not if we are prepared. It's why we are still not The comparison is increasingly unavoidable, yet stubbornly ignored: India is on a trajectory to become the next Israel. Why do I say so? Here are some questions that help answer this question. First, is India being strategically encircled by its adversaries? Yes. Consider China's efforts to build a trilateral axis with Pakistan and Bangladesh, which could in the long-run very well be turned into a security alliance aimed at challenging India's primacy in the subcontinent. Earlier, China had set up a similar mechanism with Pakistan and Afghanistan. Second, is India relentlessly provoked and compelled into a state of perpetual, high-tech and multi-domain readiness? Yes. Consider how Pakistan continues its proxy war against India using expendable and easily replaceable terrorists. Operation Sindoor was a bold campaign to punish Pakistan, but will it ensure Pakistan permanently abjures sponsoring terrorists? No. Therefore, the next flare-up with Pakistan is inevitable. Third, is India incrementally redefining the rules of engagement? Yes. Whether it was the surgical strikes, the Balakot airstrike or more recently, Operation Sindoor, India is gradually moving from strategic restraint to calculated offence. Much like Israel, it is increasingly willing to strike first, signal strength and absorb diplomatic consequences in the service of deterrence. But let us not get ahead of ourselves. While India is showing signs of adopting an Israeli-style posture which is assertive, preemptive and uncompromising on national security, it is still early days. Israel's strategic doctrine is backed by decades of seamless coordination between intelligence, military and political leadership, as well as a deep technological edge and a globally recognised deterrent capacity. India, by contrast, is only beginning to shed its legacy of restraint. Yet, time may not be on our side. The storm clouds are gathering on multiple fronts, creating a strategic nightmare that demands a radical shift in our defence posture. Between a perpetually hostile Pakistan and an increasingly Islamist-influenced Bangladesh leaning towards China, India's eastern and western flanks are volatile powder kegs. To the north, China's aggressive military posture remains an ever-present danger, while its naval expansion into the Indian Ocean opens a fourth front. Add to this the deliberate stoking of internal instability, and the conclusion is inescapable: India is facing a 4+ front war. The question is not if we are prepared. It's why we are still not. For decades, India's strategic calculus was fixated on a two-front war scenario involving Pakistan and China. Yet, recent events have demonstrated the inadequacy of this model. The brief but intense conflict with Pakistan in May 2025 served as a brutal reminder of the kinetic threat from the west. While a fragile ceasefire holds, the underlying sponsorship of terror groups by Pakistan continues to be a festering wound, capable of instigating conflict at any moment. The fact that China aided Pakistan with intelligence support during Operation Sindoor shows how Beijing is willing to go the extra mile to stymie India's strategic moves in the region. Simultaneously, the northern border remains a fluid and dangerous frontier. Despite diplomatic overtures and talks of disengagement, Chinese military infrastructure and troop deployments in Tibet and Xinjiang continue to expand. While both New Delhi and Beijing seem inclined to cool tensions that have lingered since 2020, the long-term strategic competition for influence in Asia ensures that the Himalayan front will remain heated. China will continue to use it as a leverage against India. The strategic encirclement of India extends to its eastern flank. Recent trends in Bangladesh are a cause of concern. Growing anti-India sentiment fuelled by Islamists, and the targeting of Indic minorities in Bangladesh, has ruptured what was a highly strategic partnership less than a year ago. China's deepening economic and strategic inroads into Bangladesh further complicate the security landscape on our eastern border. Myanmar, which remains in a state of civil war, represents another frontier India needs to keep a close watch on. Organisations like ULFA(I) and NSCN, who have a history of stoking violence in Northeast India, have taken refuge in Myanmar. In recent days, these groups have claimed that India attacked them inside Myanmar using drones and air weapons, although New Delhi has denied any involvement officially. The fourth, and perhaps most expansive front is the Indian Ocean. China's naval presence in the region has grown exponentially, with a consistent deployment of warships, research vessels, and even assets with anti-submarine warfare capabilities. Its military base in Djibouti and the development of dual-use port facilities in littoral states are clear indicators of Beijing's ambition to project power across this vital maritime theatre. The Indian Navy, while vigilant, is facing an increasingly intrusive challenge in these waters. Beyond these four conventional fronts lies the "plus" - the amorphous and ever-evolving domains of hybrid warfare. India is under a constant war in cyberspace and the information sphere. Coordinated disinformation campaigns, cyber-espionage and online radicalisation are not just theoretical threats any longer. Soon enough, they could become daily realities. India must be prepared to counter such non-kinetic attacks, which aim to sow discord, erode social harmony and undermine the state from within. India's response to this narrative warfare has been reactive and fragmented, exposing a critical vulnerability. Weeks after Operation Sindoor, the world was more interested in finding out how many fighter jets India lost than how many terrorists it neutralised inside Pakistan. That tells you how poor India's control over the international narrative is. The Indian military has acknowledged the need to adapt. The establishment of Integrated Battle Groups and a focus on technology infusion are steps in the right direction. However, there are still significant capability gaps, particularly in the Indian Air Force, and resource constraints that hamper full-spectrum readiness for a multi-front conflict. Thankfully, the Indian military is aware of the gaps it faces. Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Anil Chauhan, recently said, "We can't win today's warfare with yesterday's weapon systems." He also bluntly pointed out that dependence on imported technologies weakens our preparedness. India can no longer afford a piecemeal approach to its national security. The era of single-front conflicts is over. We are in a state of undeclared, hybrid and simultaneous warfare. Like Israel, we must cultivate a national mindset of constant vigilance, technological superiority and strategic agility. Our defence doctrine must be decisively reoriented to address the 4+ front reality. At the same time, India needs to augment its defence spending, by leaps and bounds no less. Only then will we be prepared for what comes next.
