Nagpur: Maharashtra is poised to become the most competitive state in terms of industrial power tariffs, with rates expected to drop to ₹7.38 per unit under the revised power policy, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis told the Legislative Council on Tuesday.Currently, the state's industrial tariff stands at ₹8.32 per unit. "After the new tariff is implemented, Maharashtra will have the lowest industrial electricity cost in the country," the CM said, comparing the rates with Tamil Nadu (₹9.04), Gujarat (₹8.98), and Karnataka (₹7.75). He assured tariffs will remain stable in coming years and will not escalate due to the tariff true-up process.Responding to a query from Nagpur-based MLC Abhijit Wanjarri, and subsequent questions from Shashikant Shinde, Satej Patil, and Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve, Fadnavis said the state has shifted to a Merit Order Dispatch system for power procurement. "This allows us to buy electricity from private players at lower rates. With long-term (25-year) contracts for solar, wind, and battery storage, we significantly reduced power purchase costs," he said.Fadnavis acknowledged that earlier tariff petitions placed a heavier burden on residential consumers to subsidise lower industrial and commercial rates. "That has now changed. The revised structure cuts tariffs across consumer categories," he noted. Around 70% residential users who consume under 100 units will see a 26% reduction in bills. Those exceeding 100 units will also benefit from price cuts.In the agriculture sector, the CM announced key changes to the solar pump distribution scheme, including a new booster pump initiative. "Farmers can now get a single-pole connection for ₹15,000, and 10 HP solar pumps will be made available as per demand," he said. Complaints on pump installation are being resolved through a unified solar portal.Fadnavis also revealed that smart meters would be introduced across farmlands to track electricity usage more accurately. "This will help measure consumption precisely and support future planning in agriculture power policy," he added. Also, the state has drafted a proposal for solarising lift irrigation schemes and is exploring conventional power options in 'dark zones' -- areas with low electrification levels.
