New Delhi: What began as a routine motorcycle theft check carried out by police in north Delhi's Alipur unravelled a murder case with the recovery of a human skeleton buried on the Yamuna riverbank.On July 16, a team led by inspector Shailendra, SHO of Alipur police station, spotted three teenagers riding a black motorcycle without a registration plate. When the cops waved them down, the trio tried to flee but were intercepted. Verification revealed that the motorcycle had been reported stolen in an FIR registered on July 11 at the local police station.During a cursory search, police recovered a neon phone from the pocket of one of the boys. "He failed to produce any documents proving ownership. Upon further questioning, the trio broke down and admitted that they had robbed a man of the phone near the riverbank," disclosed Hareshwar V Swami, DCP (Outer North).On sustained interrogation, the boys revealed that they had tried to overpower the man and when he resisted, they strangled him to death and then, as a symbolic rite, dipped his body in the Yamuna river and buried his body on the embankment between Shank No. 16 and 17, a police source revealed.The police team immediately alerted the sub-divisional magistrate of Alipur, the Forensic Science Laboratory team from Rohini and the Mobile Crime Team of Outer North police district. When a 3-ft-deep pit was excavated, police found the skeletal remains of a man. Forensic evidence was collected from the spot and the remains of the victim were sent to the mortuary of a Jahangirpuri hospital for medico-legal examination.While the identity of the deceased was initially unknown, the investigating officers used the phone's IMEI number to trace its original owner. Police eventually contacted the family, who confirmed the victim as 18-year-old Sonu Kumar, a resident of Chandpur village in Aurangabad district of Bihar. The family said Sonu, who worked odd jobs and as a labourer in the fields, had been missing for nearly three months and that his phone had been switched off during this period.Based on the findings, a robbery-cum-murder case was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita's sections 103 (murder), 238 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) and 3(5) (common intention). All three juveniles have been taken into custody.The case has not only solved the motorcycle theft case, but also unearthed a blind murder case. Further investigations are under way.
