Bhubaneswar: Commuters, patients and examinees faced a tough time on Thursday as the Congress-led statewide bandh disrupted vehicular movement and train services. The dawn-to-dusk bandh, supported by Left parties, was called demanding justice for the 20-year-old Balasore student who died by suicide over alleged sexual harassment by a faculty member and the apparent inaction by college authorities to her complaint.Three-year-old Raju Munda, from Dhenkanal district's Kankadahad block, died after the ambulance allegedly failed to reach his place on time due to the bandh. The boy was playing with his friends when he slipped and fell into the canal. "When the ambulance did not turn up, we took him to the hospital on a motorcycle. Upon arrival, he was declared dead at Kamakhyanagar hospital," said Shyam Munda, the child's father.At some places, police helped stranded patients reach hospitals. Locals also assisted them in getting vehicles. A pilgrim bus from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh was stuck on NH-16 near Banta Square in Bhadrak district, unaware that a bandh had been called. Another bus carrying Kanwariyas from Uttar Pradesh was stuck in Bhubaneswar owing to the bandh.Hundreds of commercial vehicles were stranded on national highways. Public transport disruption left roads empty and people stranded at bus stands and railway stations. Flyers faced difficulty due to non-availability of taxi services. Most educational institutions suspended operations as a precautionary measure, while govt offices across districts reported low turnout.In Bhubaneswar, police detained several Congress members who allegedly tried to march towards CM Mohan Charan Majhi's residence. "There was no report of any violence in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. We issued a toll-free phone number for people in distress. Immediate assistance was provided to several people, including an elderly patient, who was stuck on the road due to the bandh," commissioner of police S Dev Datta Singh said."Keeping the bandh in mind, 14,000 private buses went off the road from 6 am to 6 pm," said All Odisha Bus Owners' Association general secretary Debendra Sahu.Even train services were affected due to the bandh. Around 20 trains from the East Coast Railway (ECoR) zone and South Eastern Railway (SER) zone were delayed.Congress state president Bhakta Charan Das declared the bandh a success. "The govt failed to deliver justice to the girl when she was alive. We demand the resignation of chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan and state higher education minister Suryabanshi Suraj. We also demand a judicial inquiry into her death," Das said.BJP slammed the opposition and described the bandh as a drama.
