Kolkata: A day after violence in Bangladesh's Gopalganj killed at least four people and left nearly a dozen Awami League supporters injured, "leaders in exile" of the now-restricted former governing party called for "mass resistance" across the country.Former PM Sheikh Hasina, in an audio message on Wednesday, called for resistance with whatever people could lay their hands on, reminding party workers and people of the historical Ramana Race Course speech of her father and the country's founder, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in which he asked people to fight the enemy with whatever they had.Incidentally, Gopalganj is Rahman's birthplace."There is no time to sit at home now. People have to take to the streets with whatever they have. The country needs to be saved," Hasina said. After her audio address, Awami workers chalked out an agitation programme, sources said. "There will be mass resistance by people, and our leader has called for a long march to Yamuna. People and Awami League workers from every district will take to the streets and walk towards Dhaka. Sheikh Hasina has asked people to remain prepared to be part of the mass resistance programme," said Obaidul Quader, former road transport and bridges minister of Bangladesh.Speaking to TOI over the phone, Quader criticised "the unprovoked attack on our workers and people in Gopalganj". "This is the first time in the history of Bangladesh that the army opened fire on innocent civilians. The attack on people will tarnish the image of the army it built over the decades.
