Ahmedabad: The financial data received from third-party sources, ground-level intelligence, and advanced artificial intelligence tools helped the income tax (I-T) department sleuths to unearth a nationwide scam of bogus claims of deductions and exemptions.Investigations uncovered organised rackets operated by certain ITR preparers and intermediaries, who filed returns claiming fictitious deductions and exemptions. These fraudulent filings involved the abuse of beneficial provisions, with some even submitting false TDS returns to claim excessive refunds, read the release by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) issued by V Rajitha, commissioner of income tax (media and technical policy) and official spokesperson of CBDT.Experts said that for the past few years, the I-T department is using both on-ground intelligence and AI tools to identify and investigate possible tax evasion and rebate scam. Some of the exemptions claimed include house rent allowance (HRA), donations made to political parties, education loan for higher studies, health insurance premium, home loan, purchase of electric vehicle, donations made to specified charitable institutions, donations made towards rural development and scientific research, and deduction for expenses related to treatment of certain diseases for oneself, one's spouse, dependent children, parents, and siblings.Experts close to the development said that a systematic scam assures the taxpayers rebate based on fraudulent proof. "The artificial intelligence tools along with data on such expenditure with third parties can help ascertain whether such donations have been made or expenses incurred. Moreover, if it is in the list of the fraudulent entities already under scanner, it helps identify those exploiting the provision," said sources.In Gujarat, 15 individuals and entities are under the scanner, including four from Surat, three from Ahmedabad, and one from Rajkot, along with persons and entities from smaller towns such as Patan, Bharuch, Gondal, Dhoraji, and Vapi, among others. Senior officials said that these 15 persons and entities facilitated hundreds and thousands of people to claim wrong deductions or exemptions while filing ITRs.Analysis reveals misuse of deductions under sections 10(13A), 80GGC, 80E, 80D, 80EE, 80EEB, 80G, 80GGA, and 80DDB. Exemptions were claimed without valid justification. Employees of MNCs, PSUs, govt bodies, academic institutions, and entrepreneurs are among those implicated. Taxpayers are often lured into these fraudulent schemes with promises of inflated refunds in return for a commission, read the release.
