Nurses at Sasson General Hospital stage protest against pay disperaties | Pune News - Times of India

Pune: Nurses at Sassoon General Hospital staged a protest on Thursday, in response to a strike call by Maharashtra State Nurses' Association (MSNA), demanding that the authorities address discrepancies in their salaries and stop recruitment on contract.Eknath Pawar, dean, BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital, however said that services remained unaffected as the "majority of the nurses were working.""Of the 939 nurses working at the hospital in all three shifts, 345 nurses were on strike on Thursday," he said.However, patients visiting the hospital said that they could not get admission owing to the strike. Vaibhav Raut, who accompanied one of his relatives, said, "We had an appointment for ear surgery on Friday, for which we were asked to get admitted on Thursday. We got to know about the strike when we came here, and the staffers at the admissions department told me that they cannot take new admissions."Maharashtra State Nurses Association Pune branch President, Arifa Sheikh said, "Our demands are that the vacant posts must be filled immediately through promotions, and the govt must approve allowances of nurses, which have been pending for 40 years. We will continue the strike until our demands are met."The association called for the govt to address salary discrepancies of employees working in the posts of head nurse, assistant nurse, and curriculum director, cancellation of contractual recruitment of nurses and immediate commencement of 100% recruitment of permanent staffers.
