Surat: Surat, which has been consistently ranked among India's cleanest cities, has added another feather to its cap after securing the top rank in the newly introduced 'Super Swachh League' category for cities with a population of over 10 lakh.The announcement was made during a special Swachh Bharat Mission event held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Thursday. The President of India presented the award to the Surat Municipal Corporation in recognition of its outstanding efforts in sanitation and urban cleanliness.The Super Swachh League category was launched in Swachh Survekshan 2024 to honour cities that consistently performed well in previous surveys. It included cities that ranked in the top three at least twice in the last three editions, grouped based on population.Surat stood out in the 10 lakh+ population category, earning the top rank alongside other high-performing cities like Indore, Navi Mumbai, and Vijayawada.The Diamond City had jointly secured the top spot with Indore in the 2023 survey and finished second in both the 2021 and 2022 editions.SMC has established a robust waste disposal and management system that ensures scientific processing of all collected waste, municipal commissioner Shalini Agarwal said. With a daily processing capacity exceeding 1,800 tonnes, the city has achieved 100% scientific treatment of both wet and dry waste. Seven decentralized processing units are operational across various zones, reducing the burden on central facilities and improving efficiency. The civic body has also achieved 100% recycling of construction and demolition waste, amounting to over 150 tonnes per day. Legacy waste bio-mining efforts have helped clear over 10 lakh metric tonnes from old dumping sites. Public-private partnerships have played a key role in developing composting and recycling infrastructure, while electric and CNG-based waste vehicles support environmentally responsible operations.
