Hyderabad: Hyderabad has been rated as the sixth cleanest city out of the 40 cities in India with a population of over 10 lakh, according to the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 conducted by the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs. The city was ranked 9th in 2023-24, and stood at 10th place the year before. The top two cleanest cities this year are Ahmedabad and Bhopal. In Telangana, no other city featured in the top 10 list this year. However, from Andhra Pradesh, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) secured the 9th rank. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) -- the urban local body representing Hyderabad -- in addition to securing sixth rank, was also rated as a seven-star city and awarded Water+ certification. In addition to this, the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) also received an award for good sanitation practices. Hyderabad has also been awarded seven stars under the Garbage Free City (GFC) rating for the first time by the Central government. Under the Swachh Survekshan 2023-24, the city was rated as a three-star city, and under SS 2022-23, it was rated as a two-star city. Cities were assessed on 12,500 marks this year. According to the MoHUA report card, Hyderabad scored well in visible cleanliness, solid waste management, remediation of dumpsites, door-to-door collection of waste, cleanliness of residential areas, markets, and water bodies, but scored comparatively lower in source segregation. In SS 2024-25, waste-to-energy plants, artificial ponds for Ganesh Nimajjanam, cleanliness in tourist areas, debris recycling plants, and sewage treatment plants helped Hyderabad achieve the sixth rank. On behalf of GHMC, K. Ilambarithi, metropolitan area and urban development secretary (HMDA limits), GHMC commissioner R.V. Karnan, and others received the award in New Delhi. The awards were presented by MoHUA Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday. President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 Awards at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, hosted by MoHUA.
