Odisha: GM University Assistant Prof suspended following arrest for harassing female student

Bhubaneswar, July 17 (UNI) The Gangadhar Meher University (GM University) today suspended Assistant Professor Dr. Gopikanta Suna of the School of Education after his arrest by the Sambalpur Mahila Police for allegedly harassing a second-year female student of the Integrated B.Ed. course. The suspension was issued by the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University, exercising powers under Section 29 of the Odisha Universities First Statute, 1990, and Rule 12 of the Odisha Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1962. The suspension takes effect immediately. Dr. Suna has also been directed not to leave the headquarters without prior permission from the University Registrar. The action follows an FIR lodged by the student at the Mahila Police Station. In her complaint, the student alleged that the Assistant Professor entered into a physical relationship with her on the pretext of marriage and later abandoned her. The accused was taken into custody and produced before a local court in Sambalpur.
