Guwahati: One person was killed and several others including police personnel were injured on Thursday during a violent clash between security forces and evicted families in Western Assam's Goalpara district. The violence erupted after police opened fire on protestors at a site where a large-scale eviction drive had recently been carried out by the state administration. The incident took place in the Paikan Reserve Forest, where security personnel had been maintaining surveillance over 140 hectares of land recently cleared of encroachment. Officials said that some of the evicted families, who have been camping in the area in makeshift shelters since the eviction, began pelting stones at the security forces deployed to protect the forest land. Security sources stated that many of the displaced families had continued to stay in the area, setting up temporary shelters such as tarpaulin tents, claiming they had no alternative accommodation. Tensions escalated on Thursday when security forces attempted to dismantle these makeshift structures and asked the remaining families to vacate the area, leading to a violent confrontation. "The security forces were on routine patrol in the evicted area when locals attacked them during official duty," said the officer-in-charge of the local police station, who was also injured in the clash. "Around 10 constables were hurt, and some property was damaged. The forces had to use force to disperse the crowd, which included firing. Three people were hit by bullets -- one died and two were hospitalized." The deceased has been identified as Shakuar Hussain, and the injured as Kutubuddin Sheikh. Police stated that the firing was carried out in self-defence after the eviction team allegedly came under attack. The Paikan Reserve Forest spans 711 hectares, of which over 140 hectares had allegedly been encroached upon. Forest officials have claimed that these illegal settlements pose a significant threat to the region's fragile ecosystem. The Goalpara eviction is part of a broader series of eviction drives conducted in Assam over the past month across four districts, displacing over 3,300 people. This week, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that nearly 50,000 people have been evicted from approximately 160 square kilometres of land since his government assumed office in 2021. Defending the eviction drive, the Chief Minister reiterated that it was aimed at countering what he described as a "demographic invasion" by members of a particular community. The opposition has strongly condemned the government's actions and rhetoric. Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi accused the government of double standards, alleging that "several members of the administration own the highest amount of land." He further claimed that 18,000 acres of land belonging to indigenous, tribal, and minority communities had been handed over to industrialists from outside the state.
