Bhubaneswar: Police, investigating the self-immolation of a 20-year-old student in Balasore over alleged sexual harassment, said they are examining the role of the college's internal complaints committee (ICC), which was tasked to probe her complaint against a faculty member."The committee members will be questioned to ascertain whether they carried out an impartial probe into her allegations. Criminal liability and administrative lapses involving the ICC, if any, are being investigated. If we find evidence against the panel, they will face action for abetting the suicide," Balasore SP Raj Prasad said in response to demand by the girl's parents, seeking legal action against the ICC members.The govt also hinted at possible action against the ICC, whose conduct was previously questioned by BJP's Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi. He had said, "The committee's report is biased. It gave a clean chit to the accused faculty member, who was glorified by the committee members in their report." "Anyone directly or indirectly involved in the case will face the strictest action. None will be spared," revenue minister Suresh Pujari said. The girl's parents claimed the ICC failed to conduct a fair investigation. "The ICC prepared a biased report, favouring the accused faculty member against whom my daughter had lodged the sexual harassment complaint. The principal too endorsed the ICC report and warned my daughter. The ICC functionaries, including the college staff members, should be suspended and arrested," her mother said, noting that the arrests of the accused teacher and principal are insufficient.On July 1, the college established the ICC, comprising nine members -- five college staff members, a woman social worker and three students -- following receipt of the girl's complaint against the faculty member that day.On July 12, the committee submitted their inquiry report to the principal. The same day, after the principal summoned the girl to discuss the findings, she set herself on fire on the campus.
