False alarm over 'samosa', 'jalebi' sparks panic | Ranchi News - Times of India

Ranchi: Purported reports claiming that the Centre would mandate cigarette-style warning labels on deep-fried traditional snacks like samosas, jalebis, and laddoos triggered panic among small-time vendors and sweet shop owners. The confusion spread on Tuesday in market circles, social media posts, and forwarded messages, claiming the ministry of health and family welfare on Monday ordered "red-warning labels" for high-fat, high-sugar street foods. Press Information Bureau (PIB), on Tuesday denied any such order calling them as 'fake'. "I thought I'd have to hang a board saying 'eating samosas causes obesity and diabetes.' How will we survive if customers stop coming after reading such warnings?" rued Chhotelal Gupta, a samosa vendor. However, PIB said though the govt is drafting front-of-pack labelling guidelines for packaged foods, it does not apply to street foods or traditional sweets.
