Thiruvananthapuram: The Supreme Court will on Monday hear a petition urging the Central Government to intervene diplomatically to save Nimisha Priya, a 38-year-old Indian nurse from Kerala who faces execution in Yemen on July 16 over a murder conviction. A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta is expected to take up the plea filed by the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, an organisation supporting her legal battle. The petition cites urgent need for diplomatic outreach, including the possibility of paying "blood money" to the victim's family under Sharia law, a move that could potentially lead to a pardon. The matter was mentioned before the court on July 10 by advocate Subhash Chandran KR, who stressed the need for immediate intervention through diplomatic channels. The court had then asked the petitioners to serve a copy to the Attorney General and sought his assistance. Nimisha, a native of Kollengode in Palakkad district, was convicted in 2020 for the 2017 murder of her Yemeni business partner.
