Kolkata: Three days after the murder of Trinamool functionary Razzak Khan in Bhangar, police have arrested Mofazzel Molla, a TMC worker and a close aide of Khan. Molla was taken into custody by North Kashipur police on Sunday after he confessed to the crime during interrogation. He was remanded in eight days of police custody by the Baruipur sub-divisional court.According to police, Mofazzel and Razzak had a long-standing territorial dispute over control of Bijoyganj market in Chalta Beria region, a conflict that intensified after the 2023 panchayat elections. Mofazzel, who lost to an ISF candidate, allegedly lost influence over the market, which Razzak gradually took over. This reportedly led Mofazzel to hire professional killers to eliminate Razzak.On Thursday night, shortly after the two attended a party meeting at the Bijoyganj market office ahead of the July 21 Trinamool event, Razzak was attacked and killed. Police allege that Mofazzel trailed Razzak after the meeting and updated the attackers about his movements. Investigators believe he may have also helped the killers escape and arranged shelter for them. Mofazzel later appeared at the murder scene with other Trinamool functionaries, demanding justice for Razzak and even wept publicly. "CCTV footage, mobile records and witness statements helped determine the role of Molla, who was among the prime suspects since the start of the investigation," police said. When questioned by the media while being taken to court, he declined to comment, stating only that he gave his statement before police.Trinamool MLA Saokat Molla, who initially blamed ISF for the murder said the arrest reflected the administration's resolve to punish the guilty but reiterated that ISF was involved. In response, ISF MLA Naushad Siddiqui said that the truth had emerged and accused TMC of internal violence.
