Kolkata: A second-year MBA student at IIM Calcutta has been arrested after a woman alleged that she was raped inside boys' hostel of the premier institute. However, in a surprising turn, the woman's father later claimed there was no sexual assault and said his daughter was "fine and resting." The woman, a psychological counsellor by profession, visited the Haridevpur police station on Friday evening and submitted a handwritten complaint. She alleged that she had been offered pizza and water during lunch and felt unwell soon after consuming them. According to the complainant, she lost consciousness and realised, upon waking, that she had been raped and tortured. Following the complaint, Kolkata police filed an FIR against the accused, who hails from Karnataka, under sections 64 (rape) and 123 (administering drugs or poison) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and arrested him. However, on Saturday afternoon, the case took an unexpected twist. Speaking to the media, the woman's father denied all allegations made by his daughter. He claimed that no one had misbehaved with her, no sexual assault took place, and that she did not know the arrested student. "She is completely fine and is sleeping now," he said. He further stated that he received a phone call around 9.34 pm on Friday informing him that his daughter had fallen from an auto-rickshaw and had fainted. He said he found her at the neurology department of SSKM Hospital, where she had been taken by the police. Despite these claims, the Kolkata police maintained that the FIR was registered based on the woman's written complaint. A source in police said the woman had initially gone to Thakurpukur police station to report the incident, but since the IIM Calcutta campus falls under Haridevpur jurisdiction, she was escorted there by officer, including a female officer. She submitted the handwritten complaint herself, the source said. Police have now launched an inquiry into the father's public statement, which contradicts the daughter's formal allegations. Meanwhile, the accused was produced before Alipore court and has been remanded to seven days in police custody. In court, the Kolkata police claimed that on July 11, 2025, between 11.45 am and 8.35 pm, the accused, a second-year MBA student, called the complainant to his hostel room under the pretext of seeking psychological counselling. Police told the court that the accused "offered the complainant lunch and water, which she had taken, and after taking the same, the complainant felt dizziness." They claimed that the accused "did forceful sexual intercourse with the complainant without her consent." According to the police submission, the accused was arrested from the hostel at around 12.15 am on July 12.
