Pune: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said that the Navi Mumbai airport and Mumbai-Pune Expressway missing link projects will help state govt develop an economic corridor comprising Mumbai, Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Pune."Pune will be getting a new airport. But meanwhile the Navi Mumbai airport is nearing completion and once the missing link gets ready, Pune residents will be able to reach Navi Mumbai airport in a little more than an hour. The missing link project will help them avoid 6km of the expressway and save half an hour of travel time," he said.On his way to Pune by road, Fadnavis reviewed the progress of the airport and missing link works with deputy CM Eknath Shinde."Pune is the cultural capital of the state, but now it has also developed as the manufacturing and technology capital. Therefore, these projects are important for the entire Maharashtra," the CM said at a function in the city held for the release of a booklet on the one-year performance of minister of state for civil aviation and cooperation and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol.After inspecting the Yashwantrao Chavan Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link work, Fadnavis directed the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to explore the possibility of opening it by Oct-Nov, ahead of the Dec deadline.The ₹6,695-crore project is expected to ease traffic, reduce accidents, improve fuel efficiency, and offer seamless connectivity between the two major cities.The CM described the project as an engineering marvel, noting that it features India's longest road tunnel and highest cable-stayed road bridge under construction over the scenic Tiger Valley. Of the total project, 94% of work is complete, with one phase at 99% and the other at 87%, MSRDC officials said.The 10.6-km tunnel -- one of three in the project -- is already complete. At 23 metres wide, it will be the widest in India and will surpass the tunnel constructed on the Samruddhi Expressway, Fadnavis said.Currently, the 650-metre-long cable-stayed bridge, remains under construction and has been delayed by incessant rain and strong winds. The bridge features pylons rising to 182 metres, making it the tallest cable-stayed road bridge in the country."This cable-stayed bridge involves complex engineering and high-altitude work. Given the adverse conditions, we are prioritising safety and technical precision, but will try to meet the revised timeline as per the CM's directive," said Anilkumar Gaikwad, MSRDC vice chairman and managing director.Shinde called the project a "game-changer", highlighting extensive safety measures such as rockfall protection nets and advanced monitoring systems. "All due care is being taken to ensure safety, and comprehensive testing will be done before public opening," he said.The project, which is being executed for MSRDC by Afcons Infrastructure, was expected to be completed in Sept 2025, but weather and topographical challenges forced a shift in the timeline. "The construction of the country's highest cable-stayed road bridge in the Western Ghats is not just a symbol of technological excellence but a reflection of our commitment to building safer, faster and more sustainable infrastructure. We are prioritising quality and safety at every stage while focussing on project completion," said Krishnamurthy Subramanian, executive vice chairman, Afcons.S Paramasivan, managing director, Afcons, said that the cable-stayed bridge is a unique structure featuring two carriageways spaced 60 metres apart being constructed for the first time in India. "It also has the tallest pylon of 182 metres and the widest carriageway of 24 metres among road bridges. Our team is overcoming several challenges, including the remote location of the project site, strong winds, high altitude and difficult working conditions, to deliver this project," he said.
