3 die as SUV plunges into Sone canal | Patna News - Times of India

Patna: Three members of a family, including two women and a child, died after the SUV they were travelling in veered off the road and plunged into the Sone canal near Saraiya village under the Ranitalab police station area in in Patna district on Saturday morning. Two other passengers sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at a hospital.Local officials and police reached the site promptly and retrieved the submerged vehicle using a JCB machine. Police said preliminary investigations suggest the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the vehicle losing control and falling into the canal.The deceased were identified as Neetu Singh (36), her daughter Ashtitwa Kumari (10) and her mother-in-law Nirmala Devi (52). The injured, Nandan Singh and Riddhi Singh, were rescued from the vehicle and rushed to hospital for treatment.The incident occurred around 5am as the family was returning to Hajipur from Chandigarh.SHO Pramod Kumar said, "In the morning, we received information that a car had overturned into the canal near Saraiya village. The police team, with assistance from locals and a JCB machine, retrieved the car and transported the victims to a nearby hospital. Two women and a child died. Their bodies have been sent to AIIMS Patna for post-mortem examination."He added, "Five members of a family, from Kariho village in Mahua, Vaishali district, were travelling from Chhattisgarh to Hajipur for a wedding celebration. The driver suddenly lost control and the vehicle fell into the canal. Morning walkers spotted the drifting car and alerted the police."
