FM Autonomous College Principal and Asst. Prof Suspended after Student's Self-Immolation Attempt over Harassment | News Room Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government on Saturday suspended the Principal and an Assistant Professor at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore after a female B.Ed. student attempted self-immolation on Saturday, allegedly due to inaction on her harassment complaints against a teacher. The student, who sustained 90% burn injuries, is in critical condition and receiving treatment. Following the shocking incident, the Higher Education Department issued an order suspending Samira Kumar Sahu, Assistant Professor (Stage-I) in Educational Studies, and Dillip Kumar Ghose, Assistant Professor and Principal of the college with immediate effect, citing prima facie evidence of negligence. The government stated that the matter was not handled properly by Ghose, who failed to perform his duties as Principal. During the suspension period, Ghose's headquarters is fixed at the office of the Collector & District Magistrate, Balasore, and he is prohibited from leaving without prior permission from the Collector. The incident has sparked outrage across the state with citizens demanding stricter measures to address harassment complaints in educational institutions.
