Srinagar, July 11: Strong winds in parts of Kashmir this evening caused significant damage by uprooting trees and blowing away the roof tops with the Meteorological Department forecasting heavy rains and thundershower across the region. Follow the Daily Excelsior channel on WhatsApp The MeT office tonight said that a spell of light to moderate Rain/thunder will occur at many places of Kashmir Division, Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Doda, Reasi, Udhampur and a few parts of plains of Jammu during next 3-5 hours. "Few places may receive intense showers (may generate flash floods/landslides/mudslides/shooting stones). Few places may experience strong gusty winds (40-50KMPH). Stay away from loose structures/old trees/electric poles/lines etc," it said. Strong winds swept through various parts of North Kashmir this evening, causing significant damage to property and infrastructure. The winds uprooted trees and blew away roofs of several houses leading to damage to the property. At places several cars parked along the roadside in the Qaziabad and Kralgund Market areas were badly damaged due to collapse of rooftops and electric poles. Police officials arrived at the scene and urged residents to remain indoors and stay away from damaged electrical infrastructure for their safety. Restoration work has also commenced to clear the roads and restore normal traffic movement. The multiple electric cables, rooftops, and other infrastructure were damaged in North Kashmir, resulting in a complete disruption of the power supply. In Srinagar and other parts of the Valley strong winds blew this evening leading to uprooting of trees and electric poles. The wind left part of Srinagar city in dark and till late night no power was not restored to the maximum areas. The MeT in its forecast further said that there is possibility of intense showers at few places of J&K with possibility of heavy rain at isolated places of Jammu division during 14-16 July. "Flash floods at few vulnerable places with landslides/mudslides and shooting stones. Farmers are advised to resume farm operations during 11-13 July," it said.
