Delhi earthquake: Jhajjar, a small town in Jhajjar district of Haryana in northern India, has witnessed four earthquakes ranging from magnitude 4.4 to 3.7 on the Richter scale within the last 36, raising fears that a major earthquake could potentially strike the region as multiple small tremors are usually followed by a much larger and destructive seismic event, especially in seismically active zones. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), four earthquakes shook Jhajjar within a span of 36 hours, two each on Thursday and Friday. The first tremor, measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale, struck at a depth of 10 km at 9.04 am on Thursday, while the latest one, which measured 3.7 on the scale, hit at 7:49 pm at a depth of 10 Km, as per the NCS. The epicentre of all four quakes was traced to a point located 3 km northeast of Jhajjar and 51 km west of Delhi. Jhajjar lies in the Seismic Zone IV, which is categorized as a "High Damage Risk Zone", indicating a high potential for earthquakes of moderate to high intensity, according to the Delhi Disaster Management Authority. As per the authority, the entire Delhi-NCR region, which stretches deep into Haryana, as well as Noida and Ghaziabad in neighboring Uttar Pradesh, falls in the high-risk Seismic Zone IV. An earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale jolted Jhajjar in Haryana on Friday evening, with strong tremors felt across the Delhi-NCR region. As the tremor struck, panicked residents in Delhi, many of them barefoot ran out of their crowded neighborhoods and gathered in open spaces to prevent any untoward incident or injury. According to the NCS, the earthquake of magnitude 3.7 struck Jhajjar at 7:49 pm at a depth of 10 Km. No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident when last reports came in.
