Indian Coast Guard Rescues Two US National Stranded In A Distressed Yacht

New Delhi: In a dramatic high-sea operation, Indian Coast Guard (ICG) rescued two sailors, one an Americana and the other Turkish when their vessel got stranded, about 53 nautical miles (about 96 km) south of the Nicobar Islands. The ICG also towed the vessel back to port. The MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres) Port Blair received a distress alert from the US Consulate in Chennai at 11.57 am on July 10. Navigating through rough seas, the ship rescued the stranded US nationals who were on the US sailing vessel 'Sea Angel' on Thursday. The Coast Guard received a via US Consulate at Chennai, ICG Ship (ICGS) 'Rajveer' was deployed. "The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) carried out a rescue operation for the US sailing vessel 'Sea Angel' stranded about 52 nautical miles south-east of Indira Point, Andaman and Nicobar Islands on July 10, 2025," said the defence ministry in a statement. The yacht carrying two crew members, was disabled amid extremely rough conditions with a blown sail and entangled propeller. MRCC Port Blair activated the International Safety Net (ISN), alerting all nearby merchant vessels and launching rescue coordination protocols. Subsequently, 'ICGS Rajveer' was deployed at 2 pm to render immediate assistance, the ICG said. "Demonstrating professionalism and precision, ICGS Rajveer reached the vessel by 5.30 pm, established communication with the stranded crew, and conducted an on-site assessment," it said. Despite heavy winds and mechanical disablement, the crew was found safe and in good health. At 6.50 pm, 'Sea Angel' was safely taken under tow and escorted to Campbell Bay arriving the harbour at 8 am on July 11, the ICG said.
