New Delhi: Light tremors were felt in Delhi and neighbouring areas around 9am on Thursday. An earthquake of 4.4 magnitude on the Richter scale originated at a depth of 10km in Haryana's Jhajjar. No loss of life or property was reported. The tremors, which were felt across the region, prompted people to rush out of buildings. "EQ of M: 4.4, On: Oct 7, 2025, 09:04:50 IST, Lat: 28.63 N, Long: 76.68 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Jhajjar, Haryana," stated National Centre for Seismology on X.According to National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the tremors were recorded at 9.04am. On Feb 17, similar tremors were felt in the region after a 4.0 magnitude earthquake with its epicentre in south Delhi's Dhaula Kuan was recorded. That, however, occurred due to hydro fracturing or breaking of the base rock due to stress accumulation caused by gas or water, and not due to the movement of plates or layers of the earth. While Delhi has three active fault lines running through it -- Sohna, Mathura and Delhi-Moradabad fault lines -- the neighbouring Haryana region has seven such lines running across it. Delhi's proximity to the Himalayan region, which is also in a high seismic zone, further makes the capital prone to receiving aftershocks, experts said.Data from NCS showed the region recorded 446 earthquakes between 1993 and 2025 within a 50 sq km radius of the Dhaula Kuan epicentre, ranging from a magnitude of 1.1 to 4.6, highlighting the high seismic activity in the region.Bureau of Indian Standards classifies the entire country into four seismic groups -- ranging from zone II (low intensity) to zone V (very severe). Delhi and NCR fall into zone IV (severe) according to this categorisation, making seismic activity a fairly common occurrence and Thursday's earthquake no anomaly.Being a historic city, Delhi and the region around it have already seen extreme historic quakes in the past, such as the 1956 Bulandshahr earthquake (6.7), the 1720 Delhi earthquake (6.5) and the 1903 Mathura earthquake, the strongest at 6.8 magnitude.
