New Delhi: Light tremors were felt in Delhi and neighbouring areas around 9am on Thursday. An earthquake of 4.4 magnitude on the Richter scale originated at a depth of 10km in Haryana's Jhajjar. No loss of life or property was reported. The tremors, which were felt across the region, prompted people to rush out of buildings. On Feb 17, similar tremors were felt in the region after a 4.0 magnitude earthquake with its epicentre in south Delhi's Dhaula Kuan was recorded. That, however, occurred due to hydro fracturing or breaking of the base rock due to stress accumulation caused by gas or water, and not due to the movement of plates or layers of the earth.While Delhi has three active fault lines running through it -- Sohna, Mathura and Delhi-Moradabad fault lines -- the neighbouring Haryana region has seven such lines running across it.
