Private schools shift to online mode in Gurgaon, others continue offline classes | Gurgaon News - Times of India

Gurgaon: As heavy rainfall lashed the city for the second consecutive day, govt schools across the district remained open on Thursday.Despite waterlogged roads and unsafe commuting conditions, no official directive was issued for school closures by the education department. Many private schools, on other hand, shifted to online classes for the day. This, however, highlights the lack of resources of govt schools to administer online classes.According to sources, while no formal announcement was made, a number of govt school principals personally reached out to parents early in the morning, advising them to keep their children home if possible due to safety concerns."We were told unofficially not to send our children to school because of the rain and flooding near the campus," said Kavita, mother of a Class 6 student at a govt school in Sector 9.Teachers at multiple govt schools confirmed low attendance on Thursday, with many students unable to reach the schools due to waterlogged roads. "We were here, but only a handful of children turned up," said a teacher from a govt school, requesting anonymity.Meanwhile, private schools such as DAV Sector 14, DPS 45, Sharda International School, and Rotary Public School transitioned to virtual classes. The education department, however, has not issued any statement addressing the situation. "Public and private schools cannot have two different rulebooks," said Nitesh Arora, a Gurgaon-based teacher. According to an official from the DM office, the closure for govt schools should come from the head office of the education department. In emergency cases, the DC can issue closure for schools only if he gets notified by the district education officer.HPSC vice-president Suresh Chandra said, "We suggested the closure of schools, keeping in mind the safety of children. We also suggested that the subsequent Saturday can be a working day to compensate."
