Hubballi: For the first time in the 75-year history of the All India Primary Teachers Federation (AIPTF), Basavaraj Gurikar, a Dharwad-based teacher, was unanimously elected as president. Chandrashekhar Nugli, 40, a teacher leader from Vijayapura district, was unanimously elected as the secretary-1 and emerged as the youngest teacher from Karnataka to be elected for the post at AIPTF. The election process was held in Ernakulam, Kerala, on Sunday and Monday in the presence of 247 teachers' association representatives from 25 states. Gurikar has already served as working president of AIPTF for two periods of five years each. He was also the president of the Karnataka State Primary School Teachers Association (KSPSTA) for three periods and the senior vice-president of the Karnataka State Govt Employees Association. Nugli, 40, who is the sitting state general secretary of KSPSTA, is working as an assistant teacher at the Government Higher Primary School on Almatti Dam Site. Gurikar told TOI that KSPSTA has emerged stronger in recent decades, which helped him garner the attention of teachers from 25 states. "This credit goes to Karnataka primary school teachers who supported me to work as as general secretary and presidential posts for years. At the other end, we also proved our efficiency as working president of AIPTF." NK teachers are jubilant over this success. Chandru Arsikeri, president, Bagalkot district NPS employees association, and a primary school teacher, commented that these teachers emerged as role models for NK teachers with their leadership qualities. "Not only for teachers' welfare, but they also fought in the interests of govt schools and students. For instance, Nugli played a crucial role in getting free power supply to govt school buildings," he recalled. Box About AIPTF AIPTF has affiliation with teachers' associations of 25 states, and it is affiliated with Education International (EI), which has jurisdiction over 187 countries. After the independence of India, there was no significant improvement in the status and conditions of primary teachers. So, a national-level body called the All India Primary Teachers Federation came into existence in 1954. Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the then prime minister of India, inaugurated its first conference at Nagpur. It is the apex organisation of over 2.5 million primary school teachers in the country. It has restricted its activities as a trade union to safeguard socio-economic interests, salaries, service conditions, and the general welfare of primary teachers in India.
