Patiala: Heavy rains across Punjab brought significant relief to the state's power infrastructure, leading to a sharp decrease in electricity demand. On Thursday afternoon, the total power demand in the state decreased to approximately 11,500 MW, a reduction of nearly 4,000 MW from peak demand levels observed earlier this week.Of the total demand, around 4,000 MW to 5,000 MW was generated within the state, while the remaining 7,000 MW was supplied through the northern grid, compared to a scheduled allocation of over 7,500 MW.The state-run Ropar thermal power plant had two units offline until Thursday morning, though one resumed operations by evening. Most thermal units across both state-owned power plants and independent power producers operated at reduced or half load due to the lower demand.According to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) sources, generation from the two IPPs operating within Punjab rose from 1,600 MW in the afternoon to roughly 3,100 MW later in the day.Punjab experienced a maximum demand of 14,191 MW on Wednesday, compared with 15,712 MW on Tuesday and 15,317 MW on the same day last year.Officials said the decrease in demand has relieved pressure on the power grid and enhanced overall system stability, especially after the state recorded a decade-high peak demand exceeding 17,000 MW earlier this week.
