Energy storage companies must cut import dependence: Piyush Goyal

New Delhi: Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday urged the energy storage industry to reduce dependence on imports from certain countries, explore alternative sources of supply and focus on research and development for creation of innovative products. "We must work to prevent distortions. We must reduce our dependency on particular geographies and look at alternative sources of supply, where we can have resilience in our supply chain," he said at the 11th India Energy Storage Week. Goyal said the industry should look at newer technologies to cut overdependence on imports and focus on self-sufficiency. He called for enhanced collaboration among stakeholders to build both charging and battery swapping systems, thereby accelerating electric vehicle (EV) adoption and ensuring affordable and accessible e-mobility. "He also urged the industry to build supply chain resilience by reducing dependence on specific geographies and adopting new technologies to achieve self-reliance in the energy sector," the commerce and industry said in a statement quoting Goyal. The remarks come at a time when sectors such as automobiles are facing challenges due to restrictions being imposed by China on rare earth magnets. China's fertiliser export curbs are also creating issues for Indian players. Goyal said all industry stakeholders should join hands to develop charging and battery swapping infrastructure for faster EV adoption. Noting that the government is taking measures to boost domestic manufacturing in the segment, he said, "There is a remarkable 4,000% increase in our installed solar capacity. Our overall renewable energy capacity stands at 227 GW." He further said that India's "solar photovoltaic module capacity has increased nearly 38-fold and our solar photovoltaic cell capacity has increased 21-fold".
