Ahmedabad: Kharif sowing in Gujarat is off to a strong start this year, with groundnut acreage surging past the normal average and cotton sowing witnessing a sharp uptick, buoyed by timely and widespread monsoon showers. As of July 7, groundnut was sown across 17.59 lakh hectares, surpassing the state's normal sowing area for the oilseed crop, an increase from 14.09 lakh hectares covered in the corresponding period of 2024. Cotton was sown over 17.10 lakh hectares, accounting for 67.5% of the normal area under cultivation. Even though it still trails the previous year's high of 18.6 lakh hectares sown by early July, agriculture experts indicate this is a positive trend."Farmers in key agricultural belts, especially Saurashtra and North Gujarat, were quick to respond to the monsoon's timely arrival this year. This will fetch them good yields," said Gujarat agriculture minister, Raghavji Patel. The enthusiastic sowing is attributed to favourable soil moisture in the early days of the season.Dinesh Mehta, a farmer from Dhari taluka who planted three-quarters of his land with groundnut and one-quarter with cotton, said sowing timelines shifted this year. "As it has rained well since the beginning of the season this year, the soil has adequate moisture, which makes it ideal for sowing. The subsequent moderate rain helped in faster and better crop germination." If the current rainfall trend holds, yields could rise by at least 15% this season, said cotton trader Arun Dalal. "Higher MSP is also supporting farmers. This will benefit the domestic textile industry and reduce our reliance on imports. If the trade deal with the US goes through, it will add further momentum," he added."If this sowing trend leads to a healthy harvest, it could stabilize raw cotton prices, a big positive for textile processors and exporters grappling with price volatility and global competition," said a textile industry source, echoing similar optimism.
