Mumbai: A major milestone was achieved on Wednesday in the construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor, with the first breakthrough in the 21km tunnel between BKC and Shilphata. The breakthrough marks the completion of a 2.7km continuous tunnel section in India's first high-speed rail project.The BKC-Shilphata tunnel includes a 7km stretch beneath Thane creek. Of the 21km, 16km will be built with tunnel boring machines and the remaining -- from Shilphata to Ghansoli -- using the new Austrian tunnelling method (NATM). To speed up NATM works, an additionally driven intermediate tunnel was developed, allowing parallel excavation from Shilphata and Ghansoli.
