New Delhi: Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has opened its second facility under a project to convert under-utilised community centres and halls into libraries and reading rooms. This new facility, named Aarambh Pustakalya, is in Adhchini village in south Delhi.Lieutenant governor VK Saxena and chief minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the library to the people on Thursday. Officials said the library will operate 24/7 and is equipped with Wi-Fi, lockers, air-conditioning, separate toilets for men and women, a cafeteria, an outdoor sitting area and an open gymnasium.It can accommodate around 60 students at a time, with a total of 180 in three shifts of 8 hours each. The facilities are available at a monthly cost of Rs 1,000 per user. The first Aarambh library was opened at Old Rajindra Nagar, and more are planned in Vikaspuri, Sector-16B Dwarka and Rohini.In July 2024, the LG directed DDA to provide library and reading room facilities to students after three young civil service aspirants died after drowning in the basement reading room of a private coaching centre in Old Rajendra Nagar. In a review meeting in April, the authority said that work on constructing five more libraries is at an advanced stage at Adhchini, Dwarka Sector-16B, M Block Vikaspuri and Sector-11 Rohini. according to officials, the library at Adhchini offers a safe and secure environment for focused study and has facility for modular tables with built-in pop-up power sockets at each seat, high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity, secure locker cabinets, dedicated display units, and newspaper and magazine racks. Saxena said that these efforts aim to create an excellent environment for students who come to Delhi to study. "We want to ensure that the students aren't burdened by high costs and they get a safe and secure infrastructure for pursuing their dreams. These library-cum-reading rooms will also prevent them from exploitation by private commercial entities," the LG said.The chief minister mentioned that with new policies, fresh initiatives and innovative ideas emerging daily, govt is consistently working to provide better facilities for the people.
