CHENNAI: The special crime branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from New Delhi will probe the Tiruppuvanam custodial death case, in which a private security guard, B Ajith Kumar, 27, was tortured to death by police personnel, sources confirmed. As the Madras High Court's Madurai bench directed the CBI to submit the final report in the case before August 20, a team from Delhi is expected to formally take over the investigation by registering an FIR after receiving the report of the district judge in the case. "The registration of the case is under process," said an official source.Sources also said that the CBI headquarters decided to hand over the investigation to the special crime branch, Delhi. The special crime branch has also been handling the Sathankulam custodial death case in which a father-son duo, P Jayaraj and J Bennix, were beaten to death in a police station in 2020. Ajith Kumar succumbed to injuries on June 29 after a special team of police personnel brutally attacked him under the guise of interrogation in connection with an oral complaint of jewel theft from a car near Badrakali Amman Temple in Madapuram.While the case was transferred to the CBI and six police personnel were arrested, the Madras High Court ordered an inquiry by the district judge, while the state submitted it was ready to transfer the case to the CBI. A GO was also passed in this regard. On Tuesday, the court directed the CBI to submit its report before August and directed TN police to cooperate and extend support in the investigation.
